The V-2 Rocket
The Vergeltungswaffe 2, or V2 Rocket, was created by German scientist
Wernher Von Braun
in 1942. The V2 rocket was the first man made object to enter space and break the sound barrier.
Propelled by a mix of alcohol, water, and liquid oxygen, the V2 was designed to fly great distances to hit a target up to 130 miles away. Accuracy was accomplished by a gyroscopic control in the nose cone of the rocket.
The main purpose of the V2 rocket was death, destruction, and fear and intimidation. Designed to demolish British cities in England, the rocket needed to be able to travel far distances and hit their targets somewhat accurately. But, despite the gyroscope, less than 15% of all rockets launched hit their designated targets. The average range of accuracy was a about 3 miles from any direction of the target.
The V2 was a major step forward in rocket design. It proved that the concepts of rockets were a very feasible and practical idea. This concept was then used in the rockets that propelled the first humans into space. The rockets that did so used many of the same principles and design ideas of the V2.
